WALKING
Shropshire is a wonderful county to explore on foot, a quarter of the county is designated as the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so our long distance routes run through some of the most beautiful and varied landscapes you will find anywhere in Britain.
From the wild borderland hills traversed by Offa's Dyke to the wonderful long distance circular walk known as The Shropshire Way that shows you Shropshire's geological roots. Its historical importance as a borderland and the heart of Britain's Industrial Revolution, all of which have formed the County's character to make it "Uniquely Shropshire"
Located within half a mile of the Offa's Dyke path, makes The Crown @ Newcastle a great place for an overnight stay, especially as it breaks up the gruelling 15 mile "Knighton to Brompton" section of the path. This is said to be one of the hardest section regarding its terrain due to the undulating gradient of the countryside causing constant ups and downs over a succession of hills.
There are also unlimited opportunities for walking other paths nearby including Kerry Ridgeway, Shropshire Way & Jack Mytton Way. Within easy driving distance there are the Long Mynd, Stiperstones, Snowdonia, and the Brecon Beacons.
Also on The Crown's doorstep, lies two contrasting Nature Reserves "Rhos Fiddle" and "Clunton Coppice". To the west is "Rhos Fiddle" a beautiful natural upland Moorland of some 70 acres and bog on a shale base that was formed over 400 million years ago, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. To the east lies "Clunton Coppice", all season woodland that is dominated by sessile oak. The variety of habitats supports a diversity of species including hare, curlew, snipe, short-eared owl and mountain pansy.
