GOLFING
Few golfing enthusiasts come to Shropshire without fitting in some golf, and when you play on the highly regarded Shropshire golf courses it is easy to see why. Mid Wales is a vast area which offers a classic variety of golfing test and, like everywhere else in the Principality, you can enjoy some superb scenery at the same time.
Elm Lodge, Ludlow, Shropshire
Elm Lodge Golf Course is located 1 mile from the town centre of the historic town of Ludlow, in rural setting. Set amongst the beautiful rolling hills of South Shropshire, the golf club is uniquely designed around the famous Ludlow Racecourse. Measuring 6,277 yards with a par of 70 it represents a good test for the best of golfers. A nine hole par 3 golf course. In existence for well over 100 years, the course is set in unspoilt heathland based on a sand-based soil which provides beautifully springy fairways and superb greens for which Ludlow is now justifiably famous.
Church Stretton Golf Club, Church Stretton, Shropshire
The course is relatively short at just over 5,000 yards, but never easy. Many greens are raised or built into the side of a hill, which means you need to be accurate in direction and length. The 1st is a par 3 to start off, which is described by many to be the hardest starting hole to par in the county with a bank in front of the green and out of bounds to the right. The 2nd, 7th and 9th are uphill with the 15th steeply downhill. Some holes can be driven, for example the 16th, but beware, go off line and you are out of bounds.
It is a course you will never get tired of playing, as each hole is unique. It always retains your interest no matter how many times you return. The only holes, which are vaguely parallel, are the 13th and 14th, but the 13th is a dogleg and the 14th is straight. You will find the turf delightful to play from as the ball always "sits up" and the course never suffers from muddy conditions. The wind can be a problem, but it makes the thought you put into each shot even more challenging. In the summer the ferns make some holes feel narrow (for example the 9th). In the winter you have greater room for error.
The greens are consistent and play well throughout the year. The drainage is so good that we never close through wet weather and there are never any temporary tees or greens during the winter months. And if your golf is going badly you can always admire the views.
Knighton Golf Club, Knighton, Mid Wales
If you like flat, manicured, parkland courses then Knighton is not for you. But if you enjoy courses that are full of character, that have uphill and downhill lies and offer some of the most spectacular views you are ever likely to see on a golf course, then you will not do better than the nine-hole course here at Knighton in Powys, Mid-Wales. This is a 9-hole course of 5,362 yards with a Par/SSS of 68/66
